Crunch!

January 3, 2008

I was working in the office when I heard a lot of wheel-spin.  I looked out of the window and a Subaru had lost it on the ice at the end of our drive and buried its nose in the snowbank.  It was four young lads trying to go snowboarding who were probably driving too fast (oh to be young!) I lent them a shovel to try and dig themselves out and eventually found some rope strong enough to drag them clear using our car.

While I was out there I realised how cold the wind is today.  It is gusting quite hard (our weather station says up to 30mph) and bloody freezing.  Last weekend the weather service were predicting a huge storm headed our way by the end of this week.  They were saying:

“A snowstorm of potentially historic proportions will affect the Sierra Nevada during the upcoming weekend. Snowfall totals with this snowstorm could rival snowfall amounts that were seen in some of the most devastating snowstorms of the past 50 years.”

They have since backed off from that extreme but are still saying that we could get in several feet of snow from this storm at a rate of 6 inches per hour at its peak.  We expect to be inside until Monday keeping warm.  If anyone else gets stuck in the snow over the weekend they’re on their own!
