No smoke without fire

August 5th, 2008

It’s been a smoky summer so far and not very good for being out and about.  In June we had a dry lightning storm (i.e. no rain but plenty of lightning) traverse over much of California and in just one day it started over 1400 fires across the state.  Fortunately we didn’t have any close by us but because the winds here come from the east we did get a lot of the smoke from these fires blow in our direction.  Air quality here was pretty bad at times and there were days when you just didn’t feel like going out.  As you can see from the following photos taken on August 10th and August 17th it was hit and miss as to what it would be like from day to day.

Fortunately the last few days, two months after the fires started, have been completely clear.  It is amazing to see the difference between days that we thought were pretty good and a truly clear day.  The following photo was taken yesterday.

Anyway, we’re glad that the fire crews are getting on top of the fires and just hope that we can get some rain soon to make things a bit safer.
